CIMG1394Marius headed off to work this morning leaving Gabriela in charge of us for the day. She had the day pretty well planned and 9:30 or so we walked to the Tram and headed for town. As we rode the tram and the bus, we find that Brussels is not immune to the graffiti that we have seen elsewhere. However along the Tram route, there seem to be some higher class graffiti artists that actually did some nice art and finished what they started. Photos are in the article today of a few samples of what they did here. However, the question still lingers; who are these people and what is their objective?

Our first stop of the day was the Atomium. Photos will be included with todays article. The Atomium was as the focal piece of the 1958 World’s Fair. It is designed to be a replica of an Iron Crystal magnified 165 billion times (personally, I thought it only seemed about 150 billion times bigger). The Atomium was a great work of art at the time and although it was built as a temporary display for the World’s Fair, it was so popular that it has remained now for 51 years. It is the equivalent of the Seattles Space Needle or the St. Louis Arch for Brussels.

CIMG1430Today, Marius and Gabriela are going to look at a car. They are thinking of buying a VW Diesel sedan. Julie Ann slept in this morning as she came down with a cold in Paris and coupled with the amount of smokers in the public areas, her asthma was acting up a bit too. We decided to just hang out at the apartment for the day until the kids got back from their car buying. They had an appointment at 12:30.

Marius fixed a nice sausage, onion and cheese scramble for breakfast which he says is their weekly treats Saturdays. It was quite good and will hold us until our next feeding of course. Marius then did the other thing he does on Saturday morning and takes his guitar (which he bought while he was with us in Scottsdale a few years ago) and sits on the patio and plays a number of different tunes and even sings along on some of them. He is actually quite an accomplished Blues Guitarist. While in college he had a band and according to Gabriela, it was very good. We are trying to get him to let me record him, but he is being shy. If I do succeed in talking him into it, I will send the link in one of the articles.

100_2297Everyone was a bit lazy today and slept in. We rallied about 9 am and had a nice breakfast of cold meats, cheese, tomatoes, slices of cucumber, coffee and some German bread. Very tasty for sure.

We left the condo at about 11 am and headed for the bus stop. We took the bus to the Metro station, took the Metro Underground to the Brussels Central Train Station where we caught the noon train to Bruges. It is about an hour train ride but very comfortable in our second class seats.

On arrival in Bruges, we began the walk toward town, but ran across a flea market in the park so had to check that out first. If we lived here we would probably have looked it over more closely but we can’t take any more home with us. We then headed toward the central part of town.

Ken and Kay made it safely home on September 23rd. Today, Julie Ann and I left Brussels after Gabriela rode the bus with us to the airport, had a Starbucks and she headed back to town and we went to the gate.

The flight over to Europe was incredibly smooth and today was payback day. We had a lot of turbulence across the Atlantic. We landed at JFK in New York on time, had a 3 hour layover and then continued our journey home.

For those of you that have continued to monitor our travels over the past six weeks, we hope you enjoyed at least some of the details that were sent. This will be the last edition of this years travels. The camera that has been attached to my belt for the prior 42 days was put away in the brief case this morning.
