February 1, 2012: Savannah, Beaufort, Kiawah and Charleston

Off to Panera for a quick breakfast this morning then on the road to Beaufort SC which is a quaint little village on the way to Hilton Head. It has a number of Antellebum Homes. We just learned today that Antellebum is a reference to before the war and in most cases it refers to the Civil War. Thus most of the home were built along the coast in this community prior to 1860. There were some grand old homes and lots of old oak trees full of Spanish Moss draping down. However, we have now learned also that Spanish moss is not really Spanish and it is not really moss. But is sounds great and looks neat.

On to Kiawah Island which is a beautiful island after crossing over a lot of marsh land along the coast that seems to be vast areas of wastleland that is good for nothing but storing water from high tide. Kiawah on the other hand is a really nice island, with lots of golf courses and a beautiful resort called Sanctuary. We had lunch at the Jasmine Porch at the Sancutary overlooking the Ocean and great landscaped grounds. Ken W took a conference call while the others walked the grounds and did some dolphin watching from the pier.

On then to Charleston. We stopped at the visitors center for information on the city. Then on to the Hotel for our stay here which is the Mills House Inn. It is a quaint old place full of history with a great courtyard and well situated in the heart of Old Charleston. Nice rooms.

We walked around the Old town area for a while and then settled in for dinner at a great restaurant called "Poogan's Porch". It is southern cooking at it finest and prices that are quite reasonable for quality food that we had. We will probably go back again tomorrow night as it will be hard to improve on this. We reached out for a new experience and had Fried Alligator for an appetizer. The waitress told us that "it tastes like turtle". Now we have another experience to explore and need to find fried turtle.
